BetterPoints user Liam shares his story

Despite the attempts of his wife to convince him otherwise, Liam was steadfast in his desire to drive to work. That was until she introduced him to BetterPoints. Here is what he had to say about how the app and the Move for Change challenge served as a tipping point for adopting a sustainable travel habit.

Before joining Move for Change, what were your travel habits like?

“I was using the car five days a week to commute into London. I enjoyed the convenience that it offered, being able to go in and leave when I wanted.

This changed around the time that my wife introduced me to the app. She was always more environmentally conscious than I was and would encourage me to follow her lead by taking the train to work. When she explained BetterPoints to me it made a lot of sense, so I gave it a go and I’ve carried on ever since.

The app was certainly a key factor, maybe the main thing, in starting me off on my sustainable commute.”

How, if at all, has the app helped? What do you like about it?

“The ease of using it is the best thing about it. You can keep it on in the background to track your journeys and earn points. It doesn’t feel like I’ve had to do anything of note to collect them. It feels like free money. Why wouldn’t you use it for this alone?

I’m working towards a target of 10,000 BetterPoints so my wife and I can redeem a voucher at Harriet’s of Hove. I’m particularly excited by the Ditch the Car Star prize reward for the fact it will give me the points I need!

I also enjoy the competition against myself that the app provides, seeing how many minutes I’ve clocked up versus the previous week.”

How has the BetterPoints app changed your travel habits?

“I’m commuting by train at least 4 times a week now, whereas before I was taking the car. My wife and I share a bike so we will alternate between walking or cycling to the station. It’s about 20 minutes on foot and then another 10-minute walk at the other end.

Whilst it is perhaps a little more effort, the benefits for your general wellbeing and the environment are huge.”

Have you noticed any benefits as a result?

“It has definitely improved my mental wellness. It is something that I really enjoy, partly in the knowledge that it is doing good for the environment.

Whilst I am spending money on train tickets, by not using the car I am saving more on petrol costs and general maintenance.”

Big thanks to Liam for sharing his story with the BetterPoints community. He is our latest ‘Ditch the Car Star’ and we would love more participants to share their story, so we are offering you a chance to win 10,000 BetterPoints too. Just look out for an invitation to share your story in the coming weeks.
