BetterPoints user Stephanie shares her story
Whether it’s travelling across town to run errands and see friends, or heading up to London for work, opting for walking or taking public transport has been a total shift in perspective for Stephanie. Here is what she had to say about how using the BetterPoints app helped her to achieve this change.
What were your travel habits like before you got involved in Move for Change?
“I had a tendency to grab a taxi or drive. As an American I am used to the car, so it was always my default option.
However, when lockdown started and I wasn’t leaving the house much, I got into the habit of walking to get to places. This was around the time I discovered the app and Move for Change. The challenge really kept me going with my new routine during that period.”
How has using the BetterPoints app helped? What do you like about it?
“It was really fun and useful as I transitioned from a car-first attitude on travel. Now it is helping me to sustain a certain level. My housemate and I are trying to hit 50km of sustainable and active travel each week.
I enjoy when I’ve done multiple journeys throughout the day, some by bus, others on foot, and I can review the specific details of each of them.
I also like reading and drawing inspiration from other user stories, hearing about their journeys to where they are now.”
How has the BetterPoints app changed your travel habits?
“It has changed how conscious I am of the way I travel. For a local journey, I will plan to leave a little earlier to ensure I can walk to where I’m heading.
I only use the car for trips out of town, which are difficult to get to by other means. If accessible by bus or train, that’s what I’ll choose. I catch the train when travelling to London for work. Last weekend I took the bus to Devil’s Dyke and went for a walk along the ridge. It was really fun. The more I walk the more I enjoy it.”
What health benefits have you noticed as a result?
“I used to be prone to back problems from sitting at my desk for too long. Now though, because of all the walking I don’t remember the last time I was in pain.
I only moved to Brighton in January and travelling around on foot has allowed me to get to know the local neighbourhoods and surrounding towns a lot better than I would have otherwise. Walking has brought me a lot of enjoyment, so it has had mental benefits too.”
