September's Ditch the Car Star: Emily

Emily lives near Preston Park and works as an Astrobiology Researcher at UCL, having recently completed a PHD in Astrochemistry; outside of work, Emily is a mushroom and fungi enthusiast. She’s used the app to spend more quality time with her partner and strengthen their relationship.

Here’s what she said:

I’ve been a part of Move for Change for two years now, a housemate told me about it. Apart from a few months back up in Newcastle after my PHD, I’ve been using it consistently since then.
The app has been the inspiration for myself to get outside more and to walk into town, or around Preston Park. The app is really motivating in that it’s a reminder that I actually can walk those journeys, and there’s no particular goals in terms of distance or time but I try and get out once a day.
It’s meant I spend more time with my partner Liam, who’s also inspired and comes with me. We started off with getting the walk around the park done and chatted away, and then we’d walk into town together or walk before or after work, just fitting it in whenever we’ve got time. It’s meant that we have quality time together, instead of just being sat on the couch. We now talk more and it’s been good for us as a couple, I think walking has made us fall in love all over again. 
Not only has it helped us as a couple, we also use it as an excuse to walk and meet up with friends, or even striking up conversations or saying hi to random strangers which helps socially. Mentally for me, I’m cooped up working from home some days in a pretty small flat which can be quite isolating, so getting out at the end of the day is massive.
The app is a really nice, casual reminder to go outside, and it gets it into your routine without anything feeling forced."
